In many ways, Ask Me Tomorrow is the most important album by Mojave 3. It's the first record after the end of the Slowdive project and thus was composed during one of those challenging transitional periods. Times when one is caught between various conflicting needs: maintaining and strengthening old certainties while also needing to develop a new identity and lay the foundations for a new artistic career.
It is surprising then to notice how the work already appears endowed with a very strong and well-defined aesthetic. The songs float in a sonic sea with its own rules, indifferent to the outside world. What Mojave has retained from the old Slowdive framework are the ethereal and dreamy vocal arrangements, whispered softly as if afraid to awaken delicate imaginary creatures that inhabit a fragile and stunned world. The new element is given by the folk dimension that envelops the compositions. But it's a slowed, suspended, dreamlike folk.
Slowness is indeed the stylistic hallmark of the Mojave project and especially of this work. In a certain sense, it's also an audacious, bold slowness; in a world that is rushing faster and faster and is unwilling to slow down and reflect. The songs by Mojave are instead slow and majestic, melancholic and fragile.
Delving into particulars and citing individual tracks is unnecessary, although let's not be mistaken: the songs are beautiful. However, the album is the uniform flow of an ancient emotion, an arcane nostalgia now lost in the daily chaos. It's up to us to decide if we have the time to rediscover it.
Tracklist Lyrics and Videos
05 You're Beautiful (03:06)
Velvet eyes are a part of me
Sunset smiles and secret tears
Time my life to a fallen leaf
Watch the spring in all its plumage
Beautiful like the stars at night
Twist and turn before the dawn
Beautiful like the moon at night
Ducks and dives into the sea
Curtains drawn you'll miss the light
Your dawning spell will be broken
Vanished days are hard to find
Half life dreams will not be worth much
Beautiful like the stars at night
Twist and turn before the dawn
Beautiful like the moon at night
Ducks and dives into the sea
