LA RECENSIONE

MOGWAI from Glasgow to the souls of the world, highly anticipated by the critics and especially the public, release (on March 6, 2006) this "Mr. Beast", predictably shifting, as Stuart Braithwaite (vocals and guitar) recently stated in an interview, from prog to more classic rock music, probably to avoid self-repetition, fewer rhythm changes then but always the same epic and dreamy sound.

The CD starts with "Auto Rock", piano and guitar in a crescendo at a marching rhythm that opens up visions of vast open spaces. The second track is "Glasgow Mega Snake”, beginning with a tense and catchy electric guitar riff, and immediately the new compositional line is noticeable, no more slow and fast, but a more linear rhythm. "Acid Food”, vaguely country, opens with Stuart's voice and slide guitar; "Travel is Dangerous” features growing guitars and choirs; "Friend of the Night”, piano and guitar intertwine with drum rhythms to create the best piece of the album. "I Chose Horses” with contributions from Japanese vocalist Tetsuya Fukagawa and Craig Armstrong on keyboards.

Shorter and contemplative songs that never bore, snaking melodies with more vocals than in the past confirm the quality and depth Mogwai have accustomed us to. Produced by Tony Doogan (Belle & Sebastian, Super Furry Animals), "Mr. Beast" is a gamble, a challenge, Mogwai are reborn today with an old soul, whether they will still be great, no one knows, we have a great privilege, we can watch rather, listen... Mr. Beast is here and his sound makes us dream... once again...

A must-have!
