Moacir Santos (1926–2006) was a Brazilian composer, arranger, bandleader, and saxophonist renowned for harmonic innovation. Born in Pernambuco, he moved to Rio de Janeiro in the 1940s and became the first Black conductor at Radio Nacional. In 1967 he relocated to the United States, recording albums for Blue Note and Discovery, and he taught and influenced musicians including Baden Powell, Paulo Moura, João Donato, Nara Leão, Roberto Menescal, and Sérgio Mendes.

First album: Coisas (1965, Forma label). Moved to the U.S. in 1967. Recorded three albums for Blue Note and one for Discovery. Revered for blending Afro-Brazilian elements with jazz and for mentoring major Brazilian artists.
