Misha Mengelberg/Han Bennink

Musical Group

Misha Mengelberg (1947–2017) was a Dutch jazz pianist and composer; Han Bennink (born 1942) is a Dutch drummer and percussionist. Together they were central figures in Dutch avant‑garde jazz and free improvisation and co‑founders of the Instant Composers Pool (ICP) in 1967.

Both artists are noted for blending composed material and spontaneous improvisation, for a playful and often absurd stage persona, and for long association with the Instant Composers Pool collective.

A single enthusiastic review celebrates the odd-couple chemistry of pianist Misha Mengelberg and drummer Han Bennink on Midwoud 77. The review highlights Thelonious-derived melodic play, domestic percussion, and a warm absurdist humour. The writing frames the duo as playful improvisers who balance beauty and roughness.

For:Fans of avant‑garde jazz, free improvisation, and experimental piano/drums duos.

The melody is like an “earworm”.
