Surprises never end. I was searching for news about “Van Halen - the whole story,” a book published by Tsunami Edizioni, and while jumping from one topic to another, I happened to stumble upon an Italian singer-songwriter (http://www.italiadimetallo.it/recensioni/17853/mimmo-parisi/i-tipi-duri-non-scendono-dal-treno) and his latest CD, released a few months ago. I couldn't quite understand what a singer-songwriter was doing there. The title declared boldly: “I tipi duri non scendono dal treno” (“Tough guys don't get off the train”). Well, it's not the first thought that comes to mind when you wake up in the morning, ready for a day of work. Anyway, the question of why this category (if it exists?) wouldn’t allow themselves to disembark from Italo or any other train, crossed my mind. However, I told myself, let them do what they want, as long as they don’t ask for money around. I mean, riding on 'this damn train' must cost something, right? And if that’s the case, something tells me that these 'tough guys,' going round and round, might swing by my area to ask for some financial support for their eternal journey. Nevertheless, to delve deeper, I tried to understand the meaning that the singer-songwriter from Emilia, Mimmo Parisi, wanted to give to the title of his album. So, searching online, I managed to find some explanations: “‘I tipi duri non scendono dal treno’ aims to be a sort of new aphorism or apothegm, which would indicate those — the tough guys — who nevertheless carry forward a personal project. Whether you are cobblers, philosophers, imitators of another imitator, or any other improbable figure, you should carry forward any word given; in short: you don’t get off your own project! Under no circumstances.” This is the singer-songwriter's dictate. What can one say, in a singing world where people continue to struggle and cry for unrequited loves (making you want to say, "just change to another guy or girl if you're not being considered, right?"), someone with such a program makes a difference. Anyway, the tracks have a good vibe. Especially the title track “I tipi duri non scendono dal treno,” as rock and melodic as needed. Then “Angelo del rock”, a thank you to those who "invented" rock, and the ballad “Ci sarà pure un’isola”. There is even a track that winks at metal, “Non ti guardare mai dietro”. Typically, for me, a singer-songwriter is someone who with fingerpicking on a guitar or with an arpeggiated piano, tells me about themselves and their woes, but, all in all, even one with a Stratocaster and a Marshall like Mimmo Parisi has a place.
