THE REVIEW

Recently, Miles Kane hasn't been sitting idle.

The former Rascals member and part of The Last Shadow Puppets (alongside the much more prominent Alex Turner) collaborated on Lana Del Rey's "Blue Banisters" (in the beautiful "Dealer") and enjoyed his time in the supergroup Jaded Hearts Club Band (alongside Graham Coxon and Matthew Bellamy). It's been four years since his last solo effort, and now it's finally time to pick up the thread of his solo journey.

He does so with this "Change The Show," which departs quite starkly (though not entirely) from the decisive britpop turn of the previous "Coup De Grace" and presents us with a more mature yet amused Miles, finally letting loose to craft a work fully steeped in his most unbridled musical passions.

There's his longstanding hero, namely Paul Weller (and of course his Style Council): we find him a bit everywhere in this new work, but this time he's diluted in a sound that reviews Motown, genuine glam rock, and northern soul.

The Lennonesque ballad "Tears Are Falling" wonderfully opens the show, followed by the devastating single "Don't Let It Get You Down," introduced by a frantic rain of percussion and embellished (like many other tracks on the album) by the backing vocals of Holly Quinn-Ankrah, already part of Liam Gallagher's band (not to mention a cameo in the form of spoken word by the English comedian Paul O'Grady). "Nothing's Ever Gonna Be Good Enough" brings back the precious Corinne Bailey Rae in a brazenly Ike & Tina Turner duet, while the title track returns to more recent britpop and lays bare all the similarities between Kane and the former Oasis frontman.

There's also room for a piece reminiscent of adventures with companion Turner ("Constantly") and a handful of tracks crafted with class and taste, proudly conservative and finally tailored to fit its interpreter, like one of the many stylish outfits Miles loves to flaunt on every occasion.

A great album and perhaps his best solo effort, certainly the one with the most personality. The decision to re-record it from scratch was crucial, after Kane's three-year stay in Los Angeles.
