Perhaps I am not the most suitable person to review this album. An album that is a true masterpiece of the genre, a true work of art. Composed in 1959 by a lineup led by Davis himself, including people like J. Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley, this album is one of the most important and celebrated works of the genre.
If the album could be summed up in one word, it would be: elegance. Every sound exudes a fascinating atmosphere (in my opinion very noir) and rich in pathos. Davis gives us notes that leave a mark, without overdoing it, but truly spot on.
Obviously, the work of the support team is also great (if it can be called that); impeccable are the interventions and the ups and downs of Coltrane's sax, but the perfect instrumental cohesion that permeates the tracks should be noted, demonstrating Davis's excellent work as the group's leader (and the great musical skills of the musicians).
The album consists of 5 tracks (6 with an alternative version of FLAMENCO SKETCH) which, in my opinion, constitute a whole, a single great suite. SO WHAT unfolds on a typically swing rhythm (excellent Chambers&Cobb) with continuous musical comments, first entrusted to Davis's trumpet and then to the saxes of Coltrane and Adderley. The same can be said of FREDDIE FREELOADER, always characterized by a very bouncy swing tempo and impeccable musical comments from the trio of horns. The sound becomes a bit smokier and languid with BLUE IN GREEN, a wonderful slow piece, where you can notice a very delicate brushwork by Cobb and perfect musical cohesion from all the instrumentalists, making the piece musically perfect.
ALL BLUES is a long track where the tones become a bit more fluid and less dark. Here the group truly gives their best, (excellent piano work) marking the song with various improvisations, always very spot-on and tasteful. It closes with FLAMENCO SKETCH, a song that envelops us in a delicate and relaxed atmosphere, with the usual classic formula: class and elegance, creating an incomparable atmosphere that accompanies us until the end of the album.
An album that has made the history of the genre, a must-have.
