Michelangelo Buonarroti

Sculptor, Painter or Photographer

Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475–1564) was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect and poet of the High Renaissance.

Michelangelo is documented as the sculptor of David (1501–1504), painter of the Sistine Chapel ceiling (1508–1512), and creator of late works such as the Pietà Rondanini (dated c.1560–1564). He conducted anatomical studies and dissections to inform his depiction of the human body and practiced the "non finito" technique in late sculpture. He worked on the Medici Chapel (San Lorenzo) and is associated with innovations that anticipate Mannerism.

DeBaser reviews celebrate Michelangelo's genius across sculpture and painting. Reviewers focus on David's anatomical precision, the expressive 'non finito' of the Pietà Rondanini, the architectural-sculptural unity of the Medici Chapel, and the vast ambition of the Sistine Chapel frescoes. The overall stance is reverent and reflective.

By "non finito", we mean a technique that only sketches the figures on the stone, without a true discontinuity solution with respect to the matter, which still retains its appearance, its natural composition, and without detailed work, for example on features like cheekbones, hair, eyes, and hands that determine the definitive manipulation of the stone in the sculpted opus.
