THE REVIEW

Michael Jackson's second solo effort, Ben proves to be more cohesive than the previous Got to be there.

It opens with the famous arpeggio of the beautiful title track, which will also appear, representing the youthful period, in the Number Ones collection in 2003.

It continues with the guitars of Greatest Show on Earth, then moves on to two tracks similar in vocal and instrumental setup, namely People Make the World Go 'Round and We've Got A Good Thing Going.

The crescendo of Everybody's Somebody's Fool closes side A.

Side B opens with the percussion of My Girl, while What Goes Around Comes Around is more standard.

There is then a reprise, with a slightly different arrangement, of In Our Small Way, already present on Got to be there.

Closing the album are the spirited rhythm and blues Shoo-be-doo-be-doo-da-day and the lovely You Can Cry on My Shoulder.

We are on the same level as the previous one, beautiful voice but too immature repertoire.

This album also came out in 1972, with Motown ready to exploit the young talent who would definitively explode with Quincy Jones and the hit Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough.

The album displays Jackson's beautiful yet immature voice across varied styles. Though not as impactful as later works, Ben is important for understanding his early career path.
