"I'm dying in this fuckin country ass fucked up town!"
Do you know Michael Cera? This Is the End, Juno, Superbad... the acting talent has always been behind the camera. Even with the bass actually, those who saw him in Scott Pilgrim vs The World can confirm it.
And from that film, another great passion is hinted at: music! Specifically, alt-rock works, which in a way reflect his characters and his most successful films, among which are counted indie cinema classics of recent times.
In the end, all musical ideas took shape in an interesting debut, entirely self-produced and played by Cera himself, released in 2014. And it is indeed a nice result for an almost-beginner: from the introduction, the echoes of avant-garde style Beefheart resonate, but don't expect something entirely convoluted and experimental, not at all. On the contrary, the following tracks are a succession of folk, indie, and lo-fi experiments. It's a sweet album, without particular pretenses in the lyrics, melancholic and minimal in many aspects.
Although fragmented (there are as many as 21 tracks including instrumentals, small experiments, and indie folk ballads) it will warm your heart with the sweetness of the songwriting and the intense melody of the various instruments used (although there are some dead spots and passages somewhat too experimental and/or out of place); considering he used to be just an occasional bassist, here Michael really plays everything: piano, guitars, drums, and much more, besides having mixed and produced it himself.
It seems like a great beginning of a secondary path in cinema for Michael Cera, who with True That proves to be truly capable of branching out into many fields. Album recommended for folk lovers, but even the most skeptical might want to delve in with a listen: it's really worth it.
