With this album, Michael Bolton demonstrates a high degree of musical awareness; from the name “Vintage” (which implies the “good harvest”) eleven tracks of pure swing soul with hint of soft blues. The good intentions were there but something more was expected. Perhaps due to the type of music, with the “off-key” jazz chords, a work that doesn't shake you but simply passes by, like an excellent dinner in small portions that doesn't satisfy but leaves a good taste. He sings eleven tracks perfectly, yet the same few instruments are photocopied on every song (apart from some minor variations). From such a mature artist, one could expect that it is a deliberate choice, but personally, the warm and harmonic timbre of his voice wasn't enough to transport me out of reality… I also lament the scant use of strings (essential to crown that voice!). All in all, the work has its own structure. It does not contain great emotional outbursts nor fillers, as if the quality level was balanced, ordered, and consciously measured.
Therefore, a relaxing and pleasant album that however does not shy away from more professional listens, showing some fascinating maturity.
