"Ride The Lightning" is the second studio album recorded by the (at the time) Thrash Metal band Metallica.

The CD broadly reintroduces the sounds of its predecessor, "Kill 'Em All," released the previous year. The differences are essentially in the fact that the sounds are less raw, the riffs by James Hetfield pose more difficulty both in execution and listening, Lars Ulrich's drumming demonstrates more technique and complexity, Cliff Burton (R.I.P.) and his bass lines dominate even more than the year before, and Kirk Hammet can shine by creating high-level solos, without needing to mention the name Dave Mustaine, who in "Kill 'Em All" had created almost all the solos (and not only that). Even Hetfield's voice seems much better in some tracks, while in others it harks back to the guttural roars of the first album which, yes, are very thrash, but for the ears were not the best, let's face it. Let's move on to the track-by-track review of the CD:

The first track is "Fight Fire With Fire". It acts as a link between this album and the previous one... the song starts with a very calm part, then explodes into a forceful riff like James has accustomed us to... however, the chorus is in my opinion a bit lacking in originality, as is the solo by Hammet. The tempo, set by Ulrich's clockwork precision and Cliff's bass, is instead urgent and engaging. A nice song, perhaps a bit overrated, given its reputation. It stands out but does not excel.

The second track is the title track of the album: "Ride The Lightning". A piece that leaves you breathless. The intro already lets you know what you're in for... Hetfield's riff is extraordinary, aggressive, malicious, it knocks you out. The drumming, which is not excessively fast, adds a great sense of listenability to the whole, but above all...Kerry King should take back his statement "Kirk Hammet is the most overrated guitarist to ever grace the cover of a music magazine". He should take it back, because the solo in this song is indescribable. The first part is executed with breathtaking tapping, Kirk plays a series of indecipherable notes in no time, then gives way to a slower, more enjoyable part, with great melodic taste. So honor to Hammet, who for the first time fundamentally contributes to a historic piece by his band. Fantastic track, apocalyptic, brilliant, a Title-Track that couldn't have been better.

The third song is "For Whom The Bell Tolls". Here, Mr. Clifford Lee Burton takes the stage... and how. There's never been a bassist like him, who drags other members in this way. Usually, the leading instrument is the guitar, well, not in this track. Those with good ears can hear that the first part of this piece is executed by Cliff's distorted bass, and not (as it might seem) by Hammet's guitar. The track is powerful, a great classic when it comes to the band's Thrash rhythmics... there's a lack of a true solo, as Kirk has gifted us many. In this piece, in fact, the rhythmic part is performed by the latter, while a semi-solo part just after the intro is performed by the rougher (yet very effective) James. A standout song for the band with the great Cliff as the protagonist.

Here comes, in my opinion, the highlight (along with the Title-Track) of the album: "Fade To Black". What a song guys... a real semi-ballad with guts, and also one of the most successful tracks by the Four Horsemen. The intro is of high quality, it gets us into the depths of its main melody, and into its heavy and pessimistic words, pronounced by a vocally never-so-fit James. The accompaniment, always performed by the latter, is melodically simple, but precisely for this reason gentle and easy to listen to. It's one of those pieces that bring people (who initially know nothing about Metal) closer to 'Tallica's genre, which is normally much rougher. Note the second part of the song, really remarkable the riff that marks the turning point of the track, becoming more energetic and less melancholic. Hammet's final solo is technically quite easy, but really spot on... and is best enhanced by a more than stunning accompaniment. Sensational as a whole, and it never tires.

Let's move on to one of the two most criticized songs on the album: "Trapped Under Ice". Actually, the piece is very enjoyable, Lars' drum is truly unleashed, and the overall sounds incredibly resemble the first Kill 'Em All. In my opinion, a valid track, enriched by occasional Hammet solos, not transcendental in originality, but always very appreciable technically. The whole song is driven by dizzying rhythms and catchiness reigns supreme, even if the historical rides and brilliant ideas that characterize other more famous tracks by the band are far away. A valid and enjoyable track, but nothing more.

The sixth track of the CD is the most criticized by critics: "Escape". It's indicated as a song that essentially serves to fill the album... well, these things in Metal I personally don't want to hear. Bands that use ridiculous songs to fill their CDs full of crap are just insignificant commercial groups (actually equal to zero). To me, in spite of criticism, I like this piece a lot. The initial riff is good, and even if it does not excel in anything, the bass and drum lines are more cadenced than usual, and therefore there's also some innovation in this piece. The chorus does not give any particular emotion, but if nothing else, it's very catchy. The solo perhaps is the sore point... Indeed the second part of the song is in my opinion a bit boring... this is undoubtedly due to Kirk's lack of inspiration, very good technically, but who sometimes indulges in unnecessary and melodically unappreciable virtuosity. The track definitely closes with a sort of echo of Hetfield repeating the words of the chorus, fading until it disappears, somewhat like the fantastic final solo of Fade To Black. In the overall context, a well-crafted piece, even if certainly not exceptional, with some praise and little disgrace.

The seventh track is a great classic of the American band: "Creeping Death". If you haven't heard this track you don't know what Metallica is. Perhaps slightly inferior to Ride The Lightning and Fade To Black, only because the first is a too charismatic and unreachable Title-Track, and the second is a grand innovation, the band's first Power Ballad, very successful. What to say about this piece instead? That it is as studied and inspired as one can think. The intro is truly of high caliber and plunges us into a terrifying atmosphere, of real death. The chorus is excellent, as is the guitar riff of the verses, the solo is very nice even if not excessively researched, the drumming is clockwork, and Cliff's bass is as usual the driving horse of a perfect machine. Truly great track, one of the best ever for this band, and not only.

The last track is "The Call Of Ktulu". Marks the return of Dave Mustaine's specter, that extraordinary musician who, before the release of the first album, had been escorted home, in favor of Kirk Hammet, and who a few months later, together with David Ellefson, would create Megadeth. This piece is entirely instrumental and was entirely written by Mustaine and the late Cliff Burton. It's the typical track that should be blasted into the ears of those who think: "But if there's no singer, what's the point?"... The point is that it's bloody Thrash Metal, raw and genius, from the first to the last note. Intricate riffs span a surreal and magnificent atmosphere, created by Burton's omnipresent bass. The solo halfway through the track is a masterpiece of speed and essentiality... Sharp as no other. This piece is another classic from the band, even considered the best by some critics, and much appreciated (but not worshipped) by the undersigned.

The album Ride The Lightning concludes this way, when the listener would have instead wanted to continue hearing much more Metallica-branded Thrash... That genre so technical and captivating, but above all angry, which almost no one has managed to replicate with this high quality. This work also served as an inspiration for many other bands, no less important, like Megadeth and Pantera, who, taking inspiration from "Ride The Lightning", the subsequent "Master Of Puppets", and Slayer's "Reign In Blood", gave life to their artistic breakthrough, and their most representative album: "Cowboys From Hell".

Tracklist Lyrics Samples and Videos

01   Fight Fire With Fire (04:45)

Do unto others as they've done to you
But what the hell is this world coming to?

Blow the universe into nothingness
Nuclear warfare shall lay us to rest

Fight fire with fire
Ending is near
Fight fire with fire
Bursting with fear

We all shall die

Time is like a fuse, short and burning fast
Armageddon's here, like said in the past

Fight fire with fire
Ending is near
Fight fire with fire
Bursting with fear

Soon to fill our lungs the hot winds of death
The gods are laughing, so take your last breath

Fight fire with fire
Ending is near
Fight fire with fire
Bursting with fear

02   Ride the Lightning (06:37)

Guilty as charged
But damn it, it ain't right
There's someone else controlling me

Death in the air
Strapped in the electric chair
This can't be happening to me

Who made you god to say,
"I'll take your life from you"

Flash before my eyes
Now it's time to die
Burning in my brain
I can feel the flame

Wait for the sign
To flick the switch of death
It's the beginning of the end

Sweat chilling cold
As I watch death unfold
Consiousness is my only friend

My fingers grip with fear
What am I doing here?

Flash before my eyes
Now it's time to die
Burning in my brain
I can feel the flame

Someone help me
Oh please God help me
They are trying to take it all away
I don't want to die

Time moving slow
The minutes seem like hours
The final curtain all I see

How true is this?
Just get it over with
If this is true, just let it be

Wakened by horrid scream
Freed from this frightening dream

Flash before my eyes
Now it's time to die
Burning in my brain
I can feel the flame

03   For Whom the Bell Tolls (05:11)

Make his fight on the hill in the early day
Constant chill deep inside
Shouting gun, on they run through the endless grey
On they fight, for the right, yes, but who's to say?
For a hill, men would kill, why? They do not know
Stiffened wounds test their pride
Men of five, still alive through the raging glow
Gone insane from the pain that they surely know

For whom the bell tolls
Time marches on
For whom the bell tolls

Take a look to the sky just before you die
It is the last time he will
Blackened roar massive roar fills the crumbling sky
Shattered goal fills his soul with a ruthless cry
Stranger now, are his eyes, to this mystery
He hears the silence so loud
Crack of dawn, all is gone except the will to be
Now they see, what will be, blinded eyes to see

For whom the bell tolls
Time marches on
For whom the bell tolls

04   Fade to Black (06:54)

-Solo-

Life it seems, will fade away
Drifting further, everyday
Getting lost, within myself
Nothing matters, no one else
I have lost the will to live
Simply nothing more to give
There is nothing more for me
Need the end to set me free

-Solo-

Things not what they used to be
Missing one inside of me
Deathly loss, this can't be real
I cannot stand this hell I feel
Emptiness is filling me
To the point of agony
Growing darkness, taking dawn
I was me, but now he's gone

No one but me
Can save myself
But it's too late
Now I can't think
Think why I should even try

Yesterday seems as though
It never existed
Death greets me warm
Now I will just say goodbye
Bye.........

-Solo-

05   Trapped Under Ice (04:04)

I don't know how to live trough this hell
Woken up, I'm still locked in this shell
Frozen soul, frozen down to the core
Break the ice, I can't take anymore

Freezing
Can't move at all
Screaming
Can't hear my call
I am dying to live
Cry out
I'm trapped under ice

Crystallized, as I lay here and rest
Eyes of glass stare directly at death
From deep sleep I have broken away
No one knows, no one hears what I say

Freezing
Can't move at all
Screaming
Can't hear my call
I am dying to live
Cry out
I'm trapped under ice

(Scream!) from my soul
(Fate!) mystified
(Hell!) forever more

No release from my cryonic state
What is this? I've been stricken by fate
Wrapped up tight, cannot move, can't break free
Hand of doom has a tight grip on me

Freezing
Can't move at all
Screaming
Can't hear my call
I am dying to live
Cry out
I'm trapped under ice

06   Escape (04:24)

Feel no pain, but my life ain't easy
I know I'm my best friend
No one cares, but I'm so much stronger
I'll fight until the end
To escape from the true false world
Undamaged destiny
Can't get caught in the endless circle
Ring of stupidity

Out for my own, out to be free
One with my mind, they just can't see
No need to hear things that they say
Life is for my own to live my own way

Rape my mind and destroy my feelings
Don't tell me what to do
I don't care now, 'cause I'm on my side
And I can see through you
Feed my brain with your so called standards
Who says that I ain't right
Break away from your common fashion
See through your blurry sight

Out for my own, out to be free
One with my mind, they just can't see
No need to hear things that they say
Life is for my own to live my own way

See them try to bring the hammer down
No damn chains can hold me to the ground

Life is for my own to live my own way

07   Creeping Death (06:36)

Slaves
Hebrews born to serve
To the pharaoh
Heed
To his every word
Live in fear
Faith
Of the unknown one
The deliverer
Wait
Something must be done
Four hundred years

So let it be written
So let it be done
I'm sent here by the chosen one
So let it be written
So let it be done
To kill the first-born pharaoh son
I'm creeping death

Now
Let my people go
Land of Goshen
Go
I will be with thee
Bush of fire
Blood
Running red and strong
Down the Nile
Plague
Darkness three days long
Hail to fire

So let it be written
So let it be done
I'm sent here by the chosen one
So let it be written
So let it be done
To kill the first-born pharaoh son
I'm creeping death

-Solo-

Die by my hand
I creep across the land
Killing first-born man
Die by my hand
I creep across the land
Killing first born man

I
Rule the midnight air
The destroyer
Born
I shall soon be there
Deadly mass
I
Creep the steps and floor
Final darkness
Blood
Lambs blood painted door
I shall pass

So let it be written
So let it be done
I'm sent here by the chosen one
So let it be written
So let it be done
To kill the first-born pharaoh son
I'm creeping death

"Almost twenty years have passed since this album was released, and much water has flowed under the bridge in the meantime."

"It’s a pity that a perfect album is ruined by the qualitative void left by Trapped Under Ice and Escape."

"Ride the Lightning" is an authentic pillar of metal destined to rise and become a sort of bible for up-and-coming bands.

‘Fade to Black,’ the first poignant ballad from Metallica with equally tear-jerking lyrics: the highlight of the package that alone is worth the price of the CD.

Ride The Lightning can be listened to by both those who are not genuine fans of the genre and by the most convinced metalheads.

Metallica manages to construct decidedly beautiful and full of character songs with only three or four riffs, not impossible to reproduce, but then they insert guitar solos worthy of the best Kirk.

In this second album, Metallica come into play with all their technique and fury.

'For Whom The Bell Tolls' and 'Fade To Black' are indisputable masterpieces of the Four Horsemen discography and the history of metal.

Ride The Lightning, released in 1984, in my opinion is a masterpiece in the history of music, mainly thanks to the genius of Cliff Burton, the bassist.

In my opinion, it is Hetfield’s best vocal performance.
