How sad to hear Metallica mimicking themselves.
"Death Magnetic" confirms with its domineering look at the band’s discographic past that everything created from "Load" onwards is to be discarded. "St. Anger" was awful, with those endless tracks adorned with absurd low-fi sounds. I was telling myself that to judge that album, I lacked the "American" point of view and that as a good European, I wouldn't easily understand it... Well, in light of this "Death Magnetic," I strongly reevaluate the "novelty" of the strange sounds of 'St. Anger,' because it is novelty that I needed from a band like Metallica.
"Death Magnetic" is verbose, static. It expresses nothing but a call back to its glorious past, that monolithic thrash, different from the various "technical" bands of the time like Megadeth, Metal Church, Exodus, etc. The track-list runs, and you can’t help but think of "Master of Puppets," "Kill 'em All," yet what a luxury when album after album, 'tallica was always innovative and ready to surprise us... until the "Black album." Today, never mind "metal up your ass," it’s the end... and this is more than rotten.
There's no point in mentioning any tracks, they’re all on the false line, useless. Of course, it goes further downhill and into the ridiculous when talking about the instrumental "Suicide & Redemption," ten minutes of suffering for an eighties fan, or the third time of "The Unforgiven," or "The Day That Never Comes" with those too predictable opening arpeggios... not to mention the stop 'n gos... remember "One"? meh! The hardest thing to digest is Lars "evil dwarf" Ulrich's drum set, it expresses nothing, while his mates "decently" clone themselves, the drumming on "Death Magnetic" is embarrassingly flat. His are perfectly crystalline and in line with the market.
What else to say, absolute disappointment...
"Death Magnetic would undoubtedly win the Grammy for the most talked-about album ever."
"Welcome back, Metallica!"
"They should have titled the album 'Jamescantameglio' instead of 'Death Magnetic.'"
"'The Unforgiven III' sounds really bad, it's ugly, pathetic, pitiful."
With this album, the rediscovered Four Horsemen ride high again on the treacherous paths of Thrash Metal.
Death Magnetic is better than the infamous Black Album, which I never considered more than a good album.
"Death Magnetic shows that a new golden age for Metallica is impossible."
"All nightmare long' is the song that shows how Metallica, especially Hetfield, can still give a lot."
"Robert Trujillo represents one of the two main strengths of the work; incidentally, the other is the rhythm guitar."
"If the entire CD had been at the level of 'The Judas' Kiss,' one might have even been moved by such well-crafted metal in these dark years for the genre."
