At midnight, the Lord struck down all the firstborns in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on the throne to the firstborn of the prisoner in the underground dungeon, and all the firstborn of the livestock. Pharaoh rose in the night, and with him, his ministers and all the Egyptians; a great cry arose in Egypt, for there was not a house where there was not someone dead!

It was a Cliff Burton inspired by a film about the Exodus who came up with the idea for the creation of "Creeping Death," a song written collectively by the whole band, featuring riffs plundered from "Die By His Hand" by Exodus, where, it’s good to remember, Kirk Hammet served before joining Metallica. The famous bridge where James Hetfield sings:

Die by my hand
I creep across the land
Killing first born man

comes directly from Exodus, note the name, who used to perform that song live, as evidenced by a 1982 demo featuring the legendary Paul Baloff on vocals. It must be said that "Creeping Death" has an extra gear with its apocalyptic atmosphere of divine retribution in full force; the influences of classic metal are well present and give that sense of theatricality that bare thrash lacks. And in this, "Creeping Death," chosen as a single, well represents the album "Ride the Lightning," which is precisely the one where there is more trace of NWOBHM compared to the other classics of the band, as well as the one with the greatest involvement of all the musicians in the writing of the pieces, so much so that some riffs are still by the exiled Dave Mustaine. Even the B-sides of the single confirm the connection with English influences: "Am I Evil?" and "Blitzkrieg," covers of Diamond Head and Blitzkrieg, respectively, well-known exponents of the NWOBHM. Moreover, Metallica have always shown great affection for Diamond Head, as demonstrated by the words of guitarist Brian Tatler in an interview: "In the early nineties, we were absolutely broke. We didn't sell a record and weren't even able to recover the money invested in advance years before. We had not existed since 1985, and nothing was moving on that front. We had quite a few problems related to distribution and royalties, so one day Lars Ulrich called me and said that if I was having trouble collecting what was due to me, I could call a guy at Elektra, whose number he gave me. The rest is history. Suffice it to say that I mostly live off that today: royalties." What else to say: well done, Lars!

Tracklist and Lyrics

01   Creeping Death (06:36)

Slaves
Hebrews born to serve
To the pharaoh
Heed
To his every word
Live in fear
Faith
Of the unknown one
The deliverer
Wait
Something must be done
Four hundred years

So let it be written
So let it be done
I'm sent here by the chosen one
So let it be written
So let it be done
To kill the first-born pharaoh son
I'm creeping death

Now
Let my people go
Land of Goshen
Go
I will be with thee
Bush of fire
Blood
Running red and strong
Down the Nile
Plague
Darkness three days long
Hail to fire

So let it be written
So let it be done
I'm sent here by the chosen one
So let it be written
So let it be done
To kill the first-born pharaoh son
I'm creeping death

-Solo-

Die by my hand
I creep across the land
Killing first-born man
Die by my hand
I creep across the land
Killing first born man

I
Rule the midnight air
The destroyer
Born
I shall soon be there
Deadly mass
I
Creep the steps and floor
Final darkness
Blood
Lambs blood painted door
I shall pass

So let it be written
So let it be done
I'm sent here by the chosen one
So let it be written
So let it be done
To kill the first-born pharaoh son
I'm creeping death

02   Am I Evil? (07:45)

My mother was a witch, she was burned alive.
Nameless little bitch, Oh the tears I cried.
Take her down now, don't want to see her face
All blistered and burnt, can't hide my disgrace.

Twenty-seven, everyone was nice.
Gotta see 'em make 'em pay the price.
See their bodies out on the ice.
Take my time.

Am I evil? Yes I am.
Am I evil? I am man, yes I am.

As I watched my mother die, I lost my head.
Revenge now I sought, to break with my bread.
Taking no chances, you come with me.
I'll split you to the bone, help set you free.

Twenty-seven, everyone was nice.
Gotta see 'em make 'em pay the price.
See their bodies out on the ice.
Take my time.

Am I evil? Yes I am.
Am I evil? I am man, yes I am.

On with the action now, I'll strip your pride.
I'll spread your blood around, I'll see you ride.
Your face is scarred with steel, wounds deep and neat.
Like a double dozen before ya, smells so sweet.

Am I evil? Yes I am.
Am I evil? I am man.

I'll make my residence, I'll watch your fire.
You can come with me, sweet desire.
My face is long forgot, my face not my own.
Sweet and timely whore, take me home.

Am I evil? Yes I am.
Am I evil? I am man.

My soul is longing for, await my heir.
Sent to avenge my mother, sweep myself.
My face is long forgot, my face not my own.
Sweet and timely whore, take me home.

Am I evil? Yes I am.
Am I evil? I am man.

Am I evil? Yes I fucking am.
Am I evil? I am man, yeah.

03   Blitzkrieg (03:35)

Let us have peace, let us have life
Let us escape the cruel night
Let us have time, let the sun shine
Let us beware the deadly sign

The day is coming
Armageddon's near
Inferno's coming
Can we survive the blitzkrieg?
The blitzkrieg
The blitzkrieg

Save us from fate, save us from hate
Save ourselves before it's too late
Come to our need, hear our plea
Save ourselves before the earth bleeds

The day is dawning
The time is near
Aliens calling
Can we survive the blitzkrieg?
