Mervyn LeRoy was an American film director and producer active from the 1920s through the 1960s, known for films such as I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang, Gold Diggers of 1933 and Little Caesar.

Reviews on DeBaser note LeRoy directed the social drama I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (starring Paul Muni) and the 1933 musical Gold Diggers (featuring choreography by Busby Berkeley and performances by Joan Blondell, Dick Powell and Ginger Rogers).

Two DeBaser reviews praise LeRoy's social dramas and musical films. I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang is described as a powerful denunciation of the American prison system. Gold Diggers 33 is highlighted for Busby Berkeley's spectacular choreographies and its Depression-era denunciatory coda.

For:Fans of classic Hollywood, students of film history, lovers of early musicals and social-issue dramas

Extraordinary film denouncing the American prison system and more generally - I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang - is a true anthem to freedom, a freedom that in reality does not exist.

Although I don't find the plot "just a pretext" as the festival caption states, I must honestly admit that the musical sequences, particularly Remember My Forgotten Manwhich closes the feature film, outshine, in terms of quality, the story and the film itself.
