Hello. What happens if a group of over-forties, complete with white hair, extra pounds, and receding hairlines, wink at melody? Will the old guard fans cry scandal? Certainly, but that's true for regular bands, and the Melvins, who have made exception their career constant, make you shout yes? but with joy.
How is it possible: sharp guitars, bass finally up to par, proud melodies. Legendary, and when you think that Dale Crover, the best drummer in history, is joined in unison by a guy who really hits hard, you can't help but think? How lucky, two of this kind in the same band.
"A Senile Animal" is a complete album, the best since "Bullhead", which leaves you unsatisfied. Pure fury, no pause, like a hard kick in the face that stuns you. When you think about the past, it's a nice mix of the structured songs of Houdini and the blind fury of "Ozma". My condolences to the poor metalheads who occasionally clung to the Melvins' shins to find a bit of originality in a genre where talking about originality is almost a crime. Well, guys, King Buzzo has his bible, and it's called "My War" (1984 album by Black Flag). Really, it's impossible to comment on the individual songs. This is an album, finally, beautiful from the first to the last second, without respite. One cannot think of listening to this or that song, or say: "put on track three".
Let's hope this isn't the swan song of an unheard-of band, even if when you get to the last song you wonder how many more years you'll have to wait before hearing an honest and sincere album like this in a sea of banality. Oh, I forgot, in this modern sea, the Melvins have taken a leak.
October 10, 2006: history repeats itself. A new album of songs - s o n g s - by the Melvins.
Clearly, and I repeat clearly superior to the previous one. Technically excellent, masterfully produced, and without overindulging in illness.
