If we were to upgrade the noisy bands of the late '70s, just to be clear, those produced by Mr. Brian Eno in the historic "No New York", which names could we mention?
Who are the chirping little sisters of Lidya Lunch, the croaking little brothers of Arto Lindsay, who has sucked the no wave of Mars, Dna, and Contortions more effectively than anyone else from the cradle, to the high chair, at school, during recess until the less break?
You could easily move towards the '80s with the psychedelic doodles of Paul Leary or towards the noise suites of the Youth, the itinerary would not lack a visit to the cerebral Kramer's Bongwater or the enlightened residentsian Thinking Fellers Union Local 282.
But let's overlook these dissonant kids: the band we are interested in today is part of the 90s noise-rock, although it would be more correct to say "Noise-core with no-wave flares stuffed with experimentation".
Melt Banana are 3 Japanese girls who are accompanied by a scholarly session musician on drums. Their music is more than an assault on the listener's endurance: pneumatic bass in love with metal, hysterical voice and abrasive, hardcore drums inhumanly clever, and on guitar, a lady with guts who launches a sonic carpet of effects that are utterly futuristic and expressive.
Listening to Melt Banana is like rocking on a rowing boat while suffering from seasickness. We have noise at the highest levels, the nonsense of the vocals, an acoustical knowledge at its peak, a sort of melting-pot run at 13,000 miles per hour with consequent BOOOMM! on the guard rail. A must-have, to return to being kids at Gardaland on the roller coasters.
Recommended: for those who love hardcore, noise, and Fox-Core. For those looking for something extreme that rhymes with intelligent, visceral, and bloody. For those with a certain epileptic and unhealthy nature. Not recommended: For those with an untrained ear to the sounds of the Japanese noise scene. For those who think Sonic Youth is the most extreme example of noise ever existed ^_^
