The Medusa Cyclone from Detroit formed from the ashes of the modest VIV AKAULDREN. After their first album "GONE," they recorded the magnificent "MR. DEVIL" in 1998. Magnificent right from the very beautiful cover that personally reminds me a lot of the atmospheres of "ERASERHEAD."

The album is a long experimental trip very much tied to the exploration of the hypnotic aspect of abstract sounds and rhythms, where the dreamlike atmospheres reign supreme. It is limiting to call the compositions on the album songs. I would see them as a succession of scenes from an abstract DAVID LYNCH film where the sounds alternate, confounding the listener who doesn't know what to expect from the next scene. Indeed, "Mr. DEVIL" is, at its core, a sound film ... if that means anything! Occasionally from the sonic magma, a melody surfaces, something that approaches the song format.

While remaining in the shadows that encompass the FAUST experience, abstract psychedelia like the RED CRAYOLA and the more moderate wing of industrial music, "MR. DEVIL" is a great album.
