THE REVIEW

This splendid trio performs live in a Japanese club delivering an album that is nothing short of amazing, summarizing the trio's efforts: Radiolarians I, II, III...

The pieces follow one another in a whirlwind of improvisation where the three musicians interchange the lead role.... if Medeski shows all his technical skills here, surely Martin and Wood are equally adept in supporting the musical musings of the spirited pianist, blending sounds that range from Bartok's contemporary music to New Orleans and blues into a remarkable harmony. Wood's rhythm is always precise and essential, clean down to the bare essentials, aided by Martin's prodigious skill who continually converses, now with the double bass, now with the electric bass, creating a base upon which Medeski follows vigorously, his hands seemingly detached from his body and any logic, yet always able to keep the listener in feverish tension.

Rarely have I heard a record of such energy and beauty. The only drawback might be its scarcity.... to the lucky ones, happy listening.
