Chronic Melancholy.
Already released in Italy and other countries but not yet in France and England, here is the fourth work of the young Berliner. “I’ll Be A Virgin I’ll Be A Mountain” presents itself, somewhat like all his works, as a concentrate of melancholy with romantic undertones a bit too similar to itself.
The label has changed (from Kitty-Yo to V2 Records) but not the producer, the sound of the record and the whole theme of the album are, as we have mentioned, very close to the previous works and perhaps even more so to “Lady Sleep”.
A sweet and subdued romantic pop soaked in that melancholy and love suffering worthy of the truest and most suffering love poet.
The album comprises twelve songs, twelve candid and profound tracks where Maximilian's usual warm voice relies on subtle melodies tinged with those autumnal colors and full of feeling.
The piano is obviously, and once again, the most used instrument alongside an acoustic guitar, light percussion, and some strings.
The album opens with a moving and deep “Snow White” and Maximilian talks about a her so close yet eternally distant, telling of dreams he obviously wishes would come true. His splendid voice whispers a few words to us with an intimacy that exudes emotion. In second place is an acoustic guitar with a light arpeggio starting the singing while sweet strings and the usual piano step in to embellish this second love song.
Particular attention should be paid to the fourth track “Velvet Flower” where the singing becomes bolder yet sadly subdued, reminiscent of Elliott Smith steeped in that epic style of Damien Rice.
In fifth position is the first single “Silly Lily, Funny Bunny”, a beautiful and sweet ballad opened by a gentle flute where winds and strings enrich the whole song with an almost danceable rhythm, nearly perfect for a soundtrack.
The album's title track is perhaps the sweetest, deepest and most classic “Maximilian Hecker-style” song where the desolate singing rests on a carpet of piano, guitar, and percussion. Once again, the sweet songwriter speaks of his love and how he will reach it.
The perfect “Hecker-song”, the sweet romantic ballad, carefree and gently melancholic to listen to alone while surrendering to memories.
In short, even with this new album, Maximilian takes us on a refined journey into our fragile soul in contact with our most hidden and often ignored self.
It is hoped that the new label will help him become more known so that his artistic talents as a unique German songwriter are recognized on a wider scale.
