The Profile

Max Webster were a Canadian rock band formed in Toronto in 1973 and active until 1981, led by guitarist/singer Kim Mitchell. Their sound blends hard rock and progressive elements and they are closely associated with Rush.

Opened for Rush and were on the Anthem label; lyricist Pye Dubois co-wrote Rush’s Tom Sawyer; Universal Juveniles features members of Rush; early albums produced by Terry Brown. Classic lineup included Kim Mitchell, Mike Tilka, Terry Watkinson, and Paul Kersey.

Two glowing DeBaser reviews spotlight Max Webster’s blend of hard rock, prog, and flashes of fusion/blues. Universal Juveniles is praised for its Rush connection and muscular arrangements, while the 1976 debut is framed as an eclectic, overlooked gem produced by Terry Brown. Kim Mitchell’s distinctive vocals and guitar lead the charge, with Pye Dubois’ presence noted. Overall verdict: rediscover these Canadian cult heroes.
