"Max 20" is released to celebrate the 20-year career of Max Pezzali. All normal, if it weren't for the fact that good old Max already came out in 2012 with a "celebratory" album for the 20th anniversary of the release of the CD "Hanno ucciso l'uomo ragno," which contained all the songs of the original album re-interpreted by some local rappers (let's call them that). It's reasonable to suspect that he and his record label (for whom this will be his last work) find any occasion to celebrate with the money of unsuspecting fans. Especially since out of the last four CDs, three are not new releases (you might even say "better" given the quality our hero is getting us used to) but more or less successful rehashes of the usual tracks: so, after a live collection and the rap reinterpretation, the choice fell on the re-proposition of timeless classics through a series of duets, featuring the collaboration of the top names in the Italian music scene. Elio e le Storie Tese, Ramazzotti, Venditti, Renga, Cremonini, Davide VDS, Baglioni, Nek, the guy from Negramaro, Jovanotti, Fiorello, Raf, Bennato, Grignani.
Top names, all committed, to varying degrees, in devastating the best of the 883 repertoire. The "cheesy" effect is just around the corner, reaching its peak (in a negative sense) with the unbearable squeals of Giuliano Sangiorgi in "Ti sento Vivere," the pathetic harmonica by Battiato in "La dura legge del Gol," the "drunk friends singing karaoke" effect of Elio in "Nord, Sud, Ovest, Est," and the voice that is too different not to sound ridiculous of Davide Van De Sfroos in "Come deve andare" and Cremonini in "Gli anni." A true Caporetto.
Most of the artists stick to the basics, meaning they sing a few lines, a piece of the chorus, and that's it. At most, there is a "Happy Birthday Bax" from Ramazzotti's nasal voice. Those who try to add their own touch achieve poor results (see Grignani in "Rotta per casa di Dio"). The only collaboration that benefits from this is "Tieni il tempo" sung with Jovanotti, who, partly because of the lyrics he adds that align with the original song, partly because the piece itself is very similar to his style, comes out quite well.
Another "gem" is the fact that good Max does not re-sing his parts: thus, the original versions are taken, and the collaboration verses are "pasted" on top: "patchwork" effect, to be added to the "cheesy" effect.
There are also 5 new tracks. One we already know, as it's been on the radio for days. It's "Il mondo tranne noi": a cute piece but really too "easy."
The first two new tracks are somehow connected and feature the collaboration of Repetto: "Welcome Mr President" and "Il presidente di tutto il Mondo." They are followed by "I Cowboy non mollano" (perhaps the most interesting track) and "Ragazzo inadeguato," in which Max says he should go to the gym but doesn't (considering how he looks, he probably should). The flaws of these tracks, and more generally of Pezzali's recent production, are known: music and lyrics halfway between the classic parish song and an animated series theme song. Of a disarming simplicity.
I give two stars out of respect for the old 883, for Jova's generosity...and for the fact that an album of only new tracks would probably have been worse.
