Born 6 January 1838 in Cologne; died 2 October 1920 in Friedenau (Berlin). Best known for Violin Concerto No.1 in G minor, Op.26. Also composed the Scottish Fantasy, Op.46, and Kol Nidrei, Op.47, and three symphonies. Joseph Joachim contributed to the final version of the Violin Concerto No.1; the work achieved immediate and lasting popularity.
