La domenica mattina

Disclaimer: previously I had neither heard of them nor listened to any of their songs. Then, on a nice rainy day, my Saturday night buddy and I went to a store that sells a lot of ska CDs, and with the funny name and the funny cover (and also thanks to my desire to continually expand my musical knowledge) I bought this Matrioska CD called "La Domenica mattina".

Nothing could be more fitting, the album is a total explosion of ska well played, combined with fragments of rock and jazz.

The peculiarity of the CD, however, is the way the lyrics are written and the themes they represent. It starts immediately with "Non voglio più", a track that immediately reveals the group's intentions: 100% ska and catchy choruses. It moves to the Titletrack, which begins by saying "La domenica mattina vorrei stare nel mio letto..." and who can blame them.

"Ci vuole serietà" and "Lezioni di mineralogia". The first is the classic song that resonates with everyone: who has never spent a Saturday night drinking drinking drinking until exhaustion?? Or during the mineralogy lesson (and more) flirting with the girl next to you?? They are the highlights of the work, 2 well-played tracks combining ska, rock, and jazz. Also noteworthy is "Senza scampo", very nice.
The flaw of the CD, it's useless to talk about the other tracks for this reason: in the second part of the CD, the originality of the first 5 tracks is lost, with repeated rhythms, as if they ran out of steam halfway through.

This does not overshadow the fact that we are facing a group that still has to grow, but nonetheless, they have already shown their capabilities. The album deserves to be listened to at least once, oh not because after a few listens you throw it away, but who knows, someone might really like it.

Some have compared them to Cesare Cremonini's style of "singing", but there will be two reasons: 1) unfortunately, asylums have few spots 2) Cesare Cremonini, besides being a lousy artist, is also very contagious (like all lousy music). I'm sure of only this: at least the Matrioska don't go around with a bassist who looks like a bum at the Naples station.

Recommended for half.
