Oh my god! Belle and Sebastian!
Listening to I M&PC, you can't help but think of the Scots that many of us have loved and worn out their records. But this group of musicians comes from a completely different place, from a location that in the early nineties had made many tremble: Seattle.
Forget the distorted guitars, existential lyrics, and purposefully gritty sounds that defined the grunge era. In short, take off the flannel plaid shirts and long hair and replace them with lightweight-framed glasses, cardigans, and a lot of understatement... They don't release for the still excellent Sub Pop but for Matinée records (it will be a good opportunity for them to relax in the Californian sun...), a cult label for all those who follow the indie label scene and every night fall asleep with a little prayer to the lord asking for the reunion of the Smiths. Indeed, speaking finally of music, the M&PC move confidently between the musical grooves so well traced by the Smiths, BMX Bandits, and Belle and Sebastian.
This EP begins right with the title track that gently lulls us, talking about short vacations for two and making us dream of cycling trips. ""Sixteen and pretty" carefully paints the adolescent-emotional pains with levity and a melody line with a cunning that is nothing short of killer in involving the listener in the emotional plots of the sixteen-year-old protagonist of the song's lyrics. "Love, again"... the title says it all; the rest is done by the melody line and the arrangements with a guitar halfway between New Bohemians and Smiths.
The ironic "When we get famous" closes the show, thinking of their brilliant future and all those who will feign friendship and sincere feelings. The EP ends... you want more... excellent. These days, their first full CD is coming out...
Tracklist Lyrics and Videos
04 When We Get Famous (02:01)
When we get famous
We’ll be the toast of this town
We won’t let it go to our heads
We’ll still hang around
When we get famous
We won’t move to New York
We’ll still ride our bikes around time
We’ll still take the bus
When they say you’re not after my money
At first you won’t think it’s funny
But then you’ll smile
‘Cause you know me better than that
I’ll pretend I don’t believe you
When you say you’re not after my money
At first you won’t think it’s funny
But then you’ll smile
‘Cause you know me better than that
When we get famous
We’ll be the toast of this town
But we won’t let it go to our heads
We’ll still hang around
When we get famous (4x)
