Matchess is the stage name of Whitney Johnson, an American experimental musician. Releases include Seraphastra (2013), Somnaphoria (2015) and Sacracorpa (2018). Previously involved with the psychedelic rock group Verma and collaborators/associations noted with Circuit des Yeux and Riley Walker.

Sacracorpa (2018) was released on Trouble In Mind and is described as the final chapter of a trilogy begun with Seraphastra (2013) and Somnaphoria (2015). The album was recorded across multiple US locations (including Chicago, New York, Abiquiu and Curwensville), performed entirely by Whitney Johnson, mixed by Cooper Crain and mastered by Mikey Young, and incorporates analog equipment, magnetic tape, field recordings and vocal loops.

Whitney Johnson, performing as Matchess, released Sacracorpa in 2018 on Trouble In Mind as the final part of a trilogy begun with Seraphastra (2013) and Somnaphoria (2015). Entirely recorded and performed by Johnson, the album uses analog synthesis, magnetic tape, field recordings and vocal loops. It was mixed by Cooper Crain and mastered by Mikey Young. The record bridges ambient, new wave suggestions and a restrained pop sensibility.
