Matchbook Romance is an American rock band formed in 1997 from Poughkeepsie, New York; they released Stories and Alibis (2003) and Voices (2006).

The band formed in 1997 in Poughkeepsie, NY. Debut album Stories and Alibis (2003) and follow-up Voices (2006) are widely cited; the band was associated with Epitaph Records. Reviews note a shift from emo/pop-punk on the debut to more layered, indie/alternative rock on Voices.

DeBaser reviews (both by fede) compare Matchbook Romance's 2003 debut Stories and Alibis with their 2006 follow-up Voices. Voices is praised for moving beyond emo/pop-punk into layered, guitar-driven indie/alternative rock. Stories and Alibis is seen as catchier but more youthful and uneven. Standout tracks across the reviews include "You Can Run But We'll Find You," "Surrender," "Monsters," and "My Eyes Burn."

For:Listeners who prefer layered, guitar-driven rock that moves beyond emo clichés.

It's incredible how a band can change, evolve, and reinvent itself from one album to another.

Forget everything I've said so far about pop punk, etc.: here there is only excellent rock, no longer for fourteen-year-olds, still marked by the usual eyeliner under the eyes but this time much less evident, to the point that one might almost say that the band has leaned more towards indie rock.
