The Profile

Masters of Reality is an American rock band formed in 1981 by Chris Goss. Tied to the Palm Desert scene, they blend blues, psychedelia, and hard/stoner rock. The band’s revolving lineups have included Ginger Baker; Goss is also noted for producing Queens of the Stone Age’s Rated R and Songs for the Deaf.

Formed in 1981 in Syracuse, New York; principal member Chris Goss (vocals/guitar, producer). Associated with the Palm Desert scene. Discography includes six studio albums, notably Masters of Reality (1988), Sunrise on the Sufferbus (1992), Welcome to the Western Lodge (1999), Deep in the Hole (2001), Give Us Barabbas (2004), and Pine/Cross Dover (2009). Goss produced QOTSA’s Rated R and Songs for the Deaf. Ginger Baker played drums with the band in the early 1990s.

Two DeBaser reviews chart Masters of Reality from a folk-rock, fairy‑tale‑tinged Give Us Barabbas to a tight, engaging Viper Room live set. The band’s Palm Desert ties, Chris Goss’s production for QOTSA, and blues/psychedelic currents recur. Verdicts are warmly positive and recommend listening.
