Where are we, in 1981 or 2025?... Many times I doubted myself this afternoon as I rewatched this masterpiece.
A classic, after all, speaks to the world by striking the same chords which, through the passage of time, may be perceived differently.
Protagonist and visionary of a changing world, Massimo Troisi, speaks to the future with lightness, sweetness, and that shyness that distinguishes him. The world is viewed through the eyes of a child who learns quickly and solves the problems placed before him, altering the lives of those he encounters.
Even hitchhiking is dangerous in the outside world, you might find a crazy suicidal person, yet it is beautiful how madness is treated with lightness and compassion.
Gaetano is a "prophet" who shows us all the sins and virtues of the modern world far ahead of his time. The story is simple: a man who begins to explore the world outside of his shell without prejudice. Leaving the nest and becoming aware of the world's dichotomies to overturn perspectives is a very spiritual theme.
Religion is addressed in many scenes. The dialogues with the American priest spreading the "word" are marvelous and irreverent, even when discussing St. Francis, generally untouchable but reduced to an annoying figure for animals.
Gaetano is not ready to have a relationship with a strong, leading, modern woman, but in the end, with his delicacy, he manages, even considering raising a child that might not be his.
Definitely worth rewatching; I had seen it many years ago and didn't remember it at all.
It is necessary to reassess ourselves for who we have become to carry forward the world that was already written.
