"Skogen Kaller", the forests call, it is an album, or perhaps better to say a collection of songs, recorded between '92 and 2001. Led by Lord Hastur Warmachine, and assisted on vocals by Der Henker, Massemord deliver a true gem of True Norwegian Black Metal, undoubtedly capable of competing with the records of the masters of the genre.
Don't expect the latest black; fans of Cradle Of Filth, the latest Satyricon, or Dimmu Borgir can look elsewhere. This album, icy and sharp, seems to emerge directly from the early '90s, with evident influences from early Satyricon, Darkthrone, Emperor, Taake, and Ulver. This is Black Metal that is introspection, anguish, anger, terror, and blind rage. In one word, emotion.
Constantly relegated to the Norwegian underground scene, our Bergen artists, with this great album, attempt to bring elite Norwegian Black Metal back to prominence. The songs are varied, ranging from fast rhythms to slower passages, from more brutal growl to more melodic screaming, with the constant of guitar riffs always sharp and never disturbing, and sometimes with the addition of a keyboard to perfectly blend the sounds. Among all, the cornerstone "Skogen Kaller Og Vi Svarer" (The forests call, and we answer), of anguishing beauty, capable of getting into your head and never leaving.
This album represents a pearl of rare beauty, something that cannot be said of Massemord's later albums, perhaps penalized by the death of guitarist Vraith due to a mix of drugs and alcohol.
I know it's a cliché phrase, already seen and decidedly overused in reviews, but in this case more than ever, a true lover of old skool Black Metal cannot miss this album, at any cost. You will be pleasantly surprised.
