Italian music is a constant and rich source of new proposals, unknown groups that release beautiful albums often completely ignored by everyone, always in search of the next big thing in the UK or USA, losing sight of the good things Italian groups have to offer.

Among this array of excellent new proposals are these Mary In June, an emerging Roman group, making their long-distance debut here.

“Ferirsi” is a debut of depth, with a few well-crafted tracks, a post rock/folk that slowly grows to reveal a powerful and incisive rock soul.

Like in the almost instrumental “Nel buio” with its gradual build-up until it explodes in a screamed and cathartic finale. But the group gives its best when it unleashes in (post) rock tracks accompanied by visceral singing (listen to “All’interno” for example).

Each piece is a small pearl of folk melody, rock power, post transitions, all expertly mixed to result in an original sound, even using well-known ingredients.

Special mention goes to the beautiful evocative, inspired and never trivial lyrics or just thrown there. Strengthened by vocals which, despite owing something to this or that singer, still manage to give vigor and grit to every piece and carve out a prominent role.

But the album is not just about grit, and tracks like “olio, benzina e cherosene” or “color petrolio” are delicate yet powerful little folk gems at the same time, perhaps the most original and convincing tests of an album nonetheless of high craftsmanship and level.

Listen to them and try not to be enchanted by Mary in June. For me, undoubtedly the Italian debut album of the year and certainly among the best Italian albums of this 2011.

Almost forgot, the album is available for free download on their Bandcamp.
