"Scenes" is the second album by former Megadeth guitarist: Marty Friedman. Released in '92, this is Friedman's most experimental and extreme album for me. Indeed, I find it difficult to label it as an instrumental "metal" album, but rather as a solo album based on Blues, Jazz, Folk, and progressive rock (70s style). 8 songs, 40 minutes of true passion.
I'm shocked to not find even a single review of this amazing album. I consider it a true raw diamond. It has a surreal, paradisiacal, desert-like, arid atmosphere, but most of all, I would say reflective. Yes, because after listening to tracks like "Night" or "Valley of Eternity" you start to hear the usual songs with a different ear. Indescribable. All songs are of a very high level and class. Mostly exquisite, but there is no shortage of metal riffs and decadent melodies. Moreover, we can find many "ambient" sounds: bells, wind gusts, pouring rain,...
The drums (Nick Menza, from Megadeth as well) are very essential and absolutely light, but very carefully refined. With variations of cymbals, little bells, and sudden "gong" sounds (in a Japanese manner).
In addition, there is a notable use of the piano, not as a soloist, but more as sound and atmospheric effects,... especially in the background, creating a truly magical atmosphere.
As for the guitar's solo part,... well, there's nothing to say. A guitarist as skilled and sensual as Friedman should not compose poor or non-technical solos; after all, he is one of the best in the entire metal field.
The whole album has an oriental sound, as oriental as all the remaining days of Friedman's life, yes because I'm sure he will die in his blessed Japan, where he has been living for many years and where he finds inspiration for his music.
The album starts with "Tibet". A great intro that immerses the listener in the next song. In fact, it connects with the following one; with "Angel" the melody of "Tibet" matures and gains body, with many rock and notably spatial solos. Between metal melodies and rhythms. Great song. In the finale, we can hear a majestic wind and an echo of bells, the last touch is positioned on the next track, creating a truly intriguing connection;
"Valley Of Eternity" is considered the best (not for me). With a dry and decadent start that soon turns into a sensational melody. A song to say the least sensational!!! With truly touching solos and melodies that leave you stunned"
"Night" is my favorite. A superb blend of stagnant and reflective symphonies. It encapsulates "Night" in the best way. Magnificent, poignant, toward the end the voice of the guitar cries out in a unique way, beyond words. It ends in fade-out"
"Realm Of The Senses" begins with a verse in Japanese. Then it starts a real journey through Japan. The entire melody is plucked; it really feels like having tea in a Japanese house during the Sengoku era.
There is a small note to make: probably Marty Friedman was inspired by "In The Realm Of Senses". A film from 1930 set precisely in Japan (what a coincidence). And the female verse in Japanese is probably a line from the film, but I'm not sure at all. At the end, we find a small folk solo that anticipates the next track. We can also hear the pouring rain in the last 5 seconds, linking with the following song. In "West" the rain continues to fall. It is probably the most atmospheric song. Great song. In the finale, we find the pouring rain continuing (again) into the next track;
At the start of "Trance" the rain ceases and the sun begins to shine. It's a 2-minute interlude, but very beautiful. It ends in fade-out; "Triumph" is the last song. A bit dull, but very beautiful. "Triumph" is the version of Thunder March ("Dragon's Kiss" 1988 of the same Friedman) seen in the most peaceful and serene way. Very fun to listen to if you know "Thunder March".
In conclusion, to all those who are moved by the poetry of the atmospheric, I can only recommend that you listen to this wonderful masterpiece.
Now sit back and let yourself be carried away by the wind.
I hope you enjoy it.
