THE REVIEW

Let's face it, Martina is as strange a being as her colleague Goldfrapp, this woman is capable of anything, she can write challenging or simple lyrics.

I want to focus on the simplicity, because "Some Place Simple" is an album where simplicity reigns supreme, I'll say it right away, this is not the usual record of Tricky's intriguing muse, steeped in trip-hop, dance, or electropop, but a semi-acoustic music record born by chance.

Behind the creation of this album is Damon Albarn from Blur and Gorillaz. Albarn asked Topley-Bird to commission an album for his record label, Honest Jons, after seeing her performance supporting the Massive Attack tour, Damon was impressed.

"Some Place Simple" is nothing but a best of Martina in an acoustic version. The album consists of some tracks from "Quixotic" and "The Blue God" plus 4 new songs, with a maximum of two musicians on each song, namely Martina and her faithful Ninja who does everything. The instrumentation used is also simple: Rhodes, harpsichord, ukulele, balafon, acoustic/electric guitar, drums, a metallophone, and of course Martina's voice, stripped of all special effects here.

The beautiful Orchids in full jazz style, Ilya from "Quixotic" comes to life again with Martina's icy hypnotic voice that almost seems like Marlene Dietrich, that pop gem Poison transformed into a song from the Ibiza Club compilation, Sandpaper Kisses even more intimate and sexy.

Martina is an unpredictable woman, she seems destined to become a chart pop diva, but something still keeps her grounded, but sooner or later she'll take flight as she rightly should

Don't know what this is, but it all leads to this:

To expose all she knows you play like tease
