April 1, 2016, the album “LOSTILEOSTILE” by Marta Sui Tubi is released: no, it's not an April Fool's joke! This album was made possible thanks to crowdfunding, basically the fans of the group bought the album blindfolded, and something tells me they won't regret it! For this album, the formation is: Gulino's voice (also the founder of MusicRaiser, the first Italian musical crowdfunding platform), Pipitone on guitar, and Paolini on drums. With the return to a trio, their typical impulsiveness is ever-present (and in a way reassuring!).
Straightforward as always, the 13 new songs explore the theme of meeting, alternating 13 shades of “tubian” style (hostile - but hostile to whom?!). In the short tracks, one finds the energy of the early Marta, and - I believe it's a unanimous opinion - they will be among the most anticipated during live shows: the delirious “Rock+ Roipnoll”, “La calligrafia di Pietro”, the distorted “Qualche kilo da buttare giù”, and “Da dannato” with its liberating final invitation that vaguely reminds of Aldo Baglio in “Tre uomini e una gamba”. The album's theme is the meeting. Whether it's friendship in “Amico pazzo” (also chosen as the first single) amidst memories of craziness and the certainty of always being there for each other; whether it's love (actually “great love, you dickhead”) in “Un amore bonsai”, or the fatigue of “defending a cage built with feet in the mud” and the consequent desire to assert one's freedom in “Il delta del poi”, or even the sparks with a DJ recounted through rhythm and arpeggios in “+D1H – Più di un’ora” (in this case, SMS language is allowed to them). Then it moves to swing in “Con un sì”: the guitar rocks us like the waves of the sea, “with the same grace of a volcano”, a text capable of rendering the wait for a yes in images. Every encounter leaves something inside us that remains, contributing to making our character different or the same as others: this is the essence of the album, condensed in the track “Un pizzico di te”. Melancholy is not missing, musically highlighted by a hypnotic arpeggio in “Spina lenta” in the second part with the unexpected voice of Gigliola Cinquetti (since I am revealing it today - for those who have listened to the album - the surprise has faded, but during a first listen the amazement is there!). Love returns, but this time it's an unconditional declaration of love in “Niente in cambio”. Finally, the instrumental “L’impossibile”: but why this title? But why placed at the end? It lulls you, leaves you in suspension, and what you think after listening to the whole album is: is it already over?!
Really, in this album, it's difficult to say which is the best track. Like the series “was the egg or the chicken born first?”: Are their lyrics, sometimes immediate and other times complex, elevated by Gulino's voice, or is it the latter with his voice (or rather his multiple vocal capabilities) that could even sing a phone book? There's no contest, Marta are Marta: you either love them or hate them (although, according to the writer, hating them is impossible!).
