Wednesday, May 3rd, late evening, I find myself browsing the internet in search of something that could awaken my semi-comatose state… I enter the 'Marta Sui Tubi' forum and discover that two days later they will have a special live set in an art gallery in the center of Rome, with free admission.
Given my passion for the group, I couldn't have found better news… Friday, May 5th: after an hour’s journey, I arrive at Trastevere in the B5 Art Gallery, the first surprise is realizing that the concert will be very intimate, because we will be inside a room with limited capacity… there will be about thirty of us, no more.
They arrive on time and warmed up by a bit of good beer, they set up behind microphones and amplification but after two pieces comes the other twist: they unplug effects and wires, abandon the amplification to sit among us and give the concert a campfire atmosphere…. All that was missing was the fire.
With minimal technological help, extremely stripped down, with a acoustic guitar and 2 voices, you realize how technically proficient they are, they don't miss a beat, perfect voice, capable of being powerful, then light, chasing absolutely unconventional metrics.
Not to mention absurd tongue twisters worthy of a certain Demetrio Stratos. On the guitar, a big guy who really enjoys himself while taking positions that could break a hand and accompanies the singer with not at all obvious choruses. They touch on their entire repertoire from “Muscoli e Dei,” the beautiful "Vecchi Difetti” and "Cenere,” the new single “L’abbandono,” “Perché non pesi niente,” “6 Dicembre,” “L’equilibrista,” “Stitichezza cronica,” “La tua argenteria” and so on, then they revisit an old piece of theirs in their native language taken from a poem by Peppino Impastato, one of the many victims of the mafia: emotional.
The most beautiful discovery is seeing that they are simple people, who have a great time playing and joking with the audience, as if they were old friends who during a campfire decide to hum something, superbly. Every unexpected event turns into an opportunity to interact with the audience and completely break down that wall that usually divides the artist from the listener…
After an hour and a couple of “cigarette breaks” they take their leave leaving a beautiful feeling to all those present in the room.
These guys truly deserve all the attention possible from critics and the audience… let's try from time to time to value what is good in our country!
