In 1980, the so-called “garage” revival exploded: at the time, I too was swept away by many of the bands that retraced the exploits of various Sonics, The Seeds, Chocolate Watchband, and The Shadows Of Knight. It was a wave that, undoubtedly, brought a genuine explosive charge in a period – the '80s – dominated by much plastic music. Now, with hindsight, I must say that many of those bands publicized by the specialized press were not always up to the task and have not stood the test of time. Among the names I definitely save are the Chesterfield Kings, the Fuzztones, the Miracle Workers, the Morlocks, the Swedish Crimson Shadows, and even our own Sick Rose. But among the multitude of bands that, many also for fashion, immersed themselves in the '60s atmospheres and iconography, the great Marsmallow Overcoat from Tucson, Arizona must also be mentioned. Devoted to the verb of “fuzz,” the Marshmallow Overcoat never stopped preaching the gospel of garage. Recently, garage guru Timothy Gassen shot a documentary on the garage movement titled “All You Need Is Fuzz: 30 years In A Garage Band,” certainly not to be missed for those who want to enter the “zeitgeist” of the era. Now, to celebrate the career of Marshmallow Overcoat, the Pisa-based label Area Pirata is releasing a must-have CD for fans of the genre, namely “Songs From The Motion Picture All You Need Is Fuzz.” We are faced with a sort of “best of” that contains no less than 25 songs. There are also 3 new tracks and 7 songs that, for the first time, see the light on CD. The sound of Marshmallow Overcoat is ever-changing, colorful, and psychedelic: the band oscillates between psycho-pop, classic garage-punk, and psychedelia with a mature and full-bodied sound that has lost nothing of its original freshness. If you've been stuck in a time capsule of the '90s, this record is for you! The CD comes out in a luxurious digipack edition that also includes a 56-page PDF book.
