“Mark Sultan has played all over the world: from North to South America, from Japan to Israel to Africa, promoting records released by the most prestigious independent labels: Fat Possum, Norton, Bomp!, Sub Pop, Vice, In The Red. He has shared the stage and studio with Black Lips, King Khan & The Shrines, Clinic, and an endless list of other bands that would be every music listener's dream. Mark Sultan is the voice: a white version of Sam Cooke that flirts with doo-wop in small masterpieces that never exceed 2-3 minutes in length.”
I steal from another site so the opening is nicely done and you understand what and who I am talking about.
So you don't wonder why a middle-aged guy goes out on a Thursday night at ten after having “peed” and put the kid to bed, brushed the teeth (both his and mine), kissed the saintly woman sitting on the couch, and braved humidity and the infamous “superstrada” to say hi to some friends at the fantastic Loggia del Leopardo in Vogogna.
Less garage rock'n'roll than I thought, more soul, blues, and doo-wop, the show by Canadian one-man band Mark Sultan leaves a dense taste of gratitude in the mouth, and even if tonight there are only a few intimate folks, the phrase “it was worth it” remains imprinted on me on the way back.
A great voice (soul to the core, take a look at the video linked below), excellent songs, a lo-fi profile (after all, if you play alone how can you not be?), a freak costume with a blonde wig that clashes with a dry, direct, magnetic performance, where forty minutes of music flow without a second of pause.
Yes, no pauses between songs, no jokes, just substance, a "continuum" that envelops and grows and that, in my opinion, leaves the best memories in a couple of ballads and in a minute a cappella where the Sultan's voice dominates and touches the soul.
Simple “stuff”, like this review. Guitar (worn and “chipped” enough), voice (what a voice), a couple of “toms” to give rhythm with the feet, and everything concludes with two grand covers.
I buy the 45 rpm record for a few euros, politely say goodbye and go home with a new “little” hero added to my ranking of professional heroes/losers.
