O dark object of desire, or normal mid-tempo where are you? O unexpected tempo change, where are you hiding? O odd time, why don't you come out of your hiding place and show yourself in all your magnificence?
Who keeps you imprisoned?
Well, of course, mister machine Fredrik Andersson.
What importance do the splendid riffs hold, icy, sharp, executed with inhuman precision and speed by Morgan, the magnificent screamings of Legion, perhaps one of the best in the black metal scene, similar to a certain Shagrath from Dimmu Borgir.
And what about B War’s bass, present, active, not just simple background?
Nothing. Mr. Andersson relentlessly continues with his blastbeats with a precision and violence and above all a resilience that would be more typical of a drum machine than a human being.
But after all, these are Marduk and this Heaven Shall Burn... When We Are Gathered is the essence of melodic black metal.
In fact, the guitar riffs almost all have a certain tendency towards the melodic (always well-measured) that makes this album more accessible. So, while in albums like Panzer Division Marduk we could easily forget about melody, here every song is perfectly recognizable, some are even "singable", thanks to a particular anthem-like aspect that Marduk managed to give to every track except Darkness It Shall Be, which consists of just one riff.
And Mr. Andersson? Well, he continues... and doesn’t stop.
Recommended for those who want to approach black metal as it is melodic and easy to assimilate.
"Feel the darkness growing when we draw near my name is Legion for we are many in here heaven shall burn accompaigned by angels cries we shall invert paradise Death to peace" (Legion) (I decline all responsibility for content etc. etc...)
