LA RECENSIONE

The new rock endeavor by Italian guitarist and producer Marco Pernice, now a cult name in the international underground crossover scene.

In 1989, New York, the masterpiece album by Lou Reed, was released, full of controversy, names, and faces from the Big Apple at the end of the roaring 80s.
Marco Pernice thus decides to pay tribute to one of his favorite artists by reinterpreting the most rock-oriented track from that iconic album.
Strawman is a piece with social and political content, featuring Reed's explicit and mysterious lyrics.

For this reason, Pernice decides to revisit and at times completely transform this single; rather than a cover version, it’s more of a reinterpretation, with decidedly hard rock electric guitars and flamboyant solos, which were not exactly Mr. Reed's specialty.
The rhythmic base remains pounding from start to finish (often a distinctive trait of Pernice), in an almost The Prodigy style, as the 90s inevitably are part of his musical baggage.
The vocal part certainly aligns with Pernice's timbral and effectual reworkings, now a hallmark of his music.

-“I'm not interested in doing covers or playing other people's stuff around; I like the idea of making something born from another's mind my own”- Marco tells us over the phone, without mincing words. In the era of cover bands, it seems like yet another mockery.... the word "authorship" combined with "cover" makes one think.

The energy of Strawman is contagious, the rhythm always danceable, the sound granite and psychedelic, with no-compromise distortions. For fans of certain alternative rock, it could be a gem to keep in the playlist. Why not? After all, we’re talking about Lou Reed, an often uncomfortable and controversial artist—this is stuff for connoisseurs!
