‘Uscita di sicurezza' is an album from 2001. Listening to it, I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that Masini remained faithful to his previous works (which I had liked all of them), maintaining intact the characteristics that distinguish him, namely the poetic nature, the assonance of the verses, and their content, in which solitude is often discernible, or the rancor and discontent for the general course of events; the inertia from which it is difficult to escape, and in this work also the empathy for the inhabitants of Third World countries, in the very touching and relatable track ‘Figlio della polvere', just as much as the singer's commitment in this sense outside of music.
However, the lyrics on this album are not purely melancholic, the alternation of love songs and simply poetic ones goes hand in hand; indeed, as far as the creative aspect is concerned, numerous very special points are added, involving philosophy, as in ‘La danza della ragione', or ‘La clessidra' which consequently seem abstruse, hermetic, and enigmatic, following that established rule in the poetry of various authors. To complete the list of the album’s themes, I include the historical parenthesis of ‘Sant'Elena', concerning the emblematic figure of Napoleon Bonaparte; another track is ‘E chi se ne frega', a beautiful cover of ‘Nothing else matters' with altered lyrics that I liked very much even though I adored the original version; ending with ‘Vai male a scuola' specifically addressed to this phase of life, to the problems encountered, as well as potential cautions urged by Masini.
Thematically I think I have exhausted the subject, but I don't want to dwell on what concerns the music, which in any case is well structured for the accompaniment role it plays.
Unfortunately, all the praises I have sung about it today are no longer valid, at least in my opinion: all subsequent works to this one left me with a bitter taste in my mouth, or in my ears, from the little I have heard and consequently avoided purchasing them. This CD, however, I consider really worthy of Marco Masini and his great melodic and poetic sense.
