After six years since his last appearance in Sanremo (five considering the duet in 2010 with Povia), Marco Masini returns to the Ariston stage, and he does so in a completely renewed guise, with a piece that highlights the significant technical skills of the Florentine singer-songwriter. Che giorno èindeed represents the beginning of a new path for Masini("Musically if Disperato were the South Pole, Che giorno è would be the North Pole") that along with the Sanremo piece, he releases a collection of 3 CDs for a total of 42 songs, 5 unreleased (including Che giorno è), the piece by Francesco Nuti Sarà per te sung at Sanremo during the cover night, the great hits and some songs fallen into oblivion and rediscovered for the occasion plus some special "gems" like the theme song of the animated series Shaman King sung by Masini himself, the piece written for him by a fan during his retirement period Cosa Rimane (A Marco) (by Andrea Amati) and a semi-unknown song contained on the B-side of the first 45 rpm single released by Masini, Bugie, written together with Giuseppe Dati a year before his debut at Sanremo.
The album indeed begins with Che giorno è, written with two authors working with Masini for the first time: Federica Camba and Daniele Coro (authors of Stupida by Alessandra Amoroso), a piece that starts slow and then grows, exploding at the end, a text not very "Masiniano"(You can feel Camba's hand more than his, but Masini himself stated he focused more on the music and arrangements) but still significant, especially in response to those who can't help but bring up silly things about the more or less pessimistic nature of his songs. Then we move on to the unreleased: Non è vero che l'amore cambia il mondo is a piece that reminds a bit of the crazy experiment Scimmie, the piece is very radio-friendly, the chorus easily gets stuck in your head, and the text is interesting, it might be one of those singles that "break through," even more so than Che giorno è, the other unreleased tracks seem to pick up and develop the pop-rock path Masini embarked on with Niente d'Importante: Noi 2 is a slow piece, Masiniano in the text and music, the end of a love is told with melancholy but more reasonably, without the total despair that often stood out in other pieces, a matured Masini then, able to tackle certain themes in a more nuanced and less "youthful" way. Io non ci perdonerò echoes the previous theme, as text and music it could almost be a continuation, but in some ways, it seems like a song developed a bit hastily, which feels like a missed opportunity, it could have been a beautiful piece, it remains sufficient but doesn't go beyond. Instead, the fifth piece is a great one, L'amore è stato qui, the best of the unreleased tracks, less flat compared to the previous two, here Masini tells what was and what is the relationship with his parents, it's a piece that grabs you and slowly takes you with it, to be listened to and listened to again.
There is also the cover, Sarà per te is performed masterfully, confirming Masini's excellent skills as a performer, then the collection starts, going back in time, starting from Io ti volevo, an unreleased track from the 2013 piano and voice collection, to end the first CD with Il giardino delle api, from the homonymous album of 2005, in the middle, the best songs of the last decade of his career, among which stands out Lontano dai tuoi angeli, dedicated to his mother, one of the most beautiful songs in his discography, certainly the best of the second half of his career.
The second CD starts with the song brought to Sanremo in 2005, Nel mondo dei sogni, in the Unplugged version with Jessica Morlacchi, then going back another 10 years to Principessa,a very strong and significant text, penalized by being on the same album as the more famous Bella Stronza, in the middle famous pieces like L'uomo volante and some less known, like the two extracted from Uscita di Sicurezza: Lasciaminonmilasciare and Il bellissimo mestiere and Scimmie, the title track of the self-titled rock experiment of '98 ("These are pieces that were not understood, I put them there because I want to understand why" Masini stated at the album's presentation, probably referring to the ostracism suffered during that period).
The last CD instead features the tracks that brought Masini to prominence in the early '90s and that still remain in people's memories, from Bella stronza and Vaffanculo to Ci vorrebbe il mare, Caro Babbo and Disperato, passing through T'innamorerai, Perchè lo fai and Cenerentola Innamorata (presented in a beautiful rearranged version, already present in the album Masini of 2004), there's also some less known piece, like Un piccolo Chopin and Dentro di te fuori dal mondo (in Dance version) and the almost unknown Bugie.
42 tracks that aim to represent the rebirth of an artist (and a man) who has fallen many times and just as many times has gotten up to come back stronger than before, who, with the signing of the contract with SONY, is initiating a growth project, which at least up to this point seems to be going very well.
