The Profile

Manassas was an American band formed in 1971 by Stephen Stills and Chris Hillman. Blending rock, country, folk, blues, and Latin elements, they released the double album Manassas (1972) and Down the Road (1973) before disbanding. A compilation, Pieces, followed later.

Line-up cited in reviews: Stephen Stills, Chris Hillman, Al Perkins, Dallas Taylor, Calvin “Fuzzy” Samuels, Paul Harris, and Joe Lala; Bill Wyman guested on one track. The debut Manassas (1972) is a double album; the follow-up Down the Road (1973) is regarded as less ambitious but energetic.

Two DeBaser reviews paint Manassas as Stephen Stills’s peak-era project with Chris Hillman, blending West Coast rock, country-bluegrass, folk and Latin sparks. The 1972 double Manassas is hailed as a career summit, with songs from “It Doesn’t Matter” to the expansive “Treasure.” The 1973 Down the Road divides opinion: less ambitious but defended as danceable and dynamic. Line-up credits include Stills, Hillman, Al Perkins, Dallas Taylor, Calvin “Fuzzy” Samuels, Paul Harris, and Joe Lala.
