Upon listening to the first track, "Pornobisogno," I turned up my nose. The usual riffs, the usual amphetaminic sound of brit pop-rock-indie from the 2000s, even a voice that sounds familiar, although the singing is in Italian.
However, I found myself inevitably drawn to that fresh and summery sound, and, since spring is advancing relentlessly in Turin (between thunderstorms), I listened to the whole disc thoroughly.
Needless to say, my first impression was somewhat rash, and I completely changed my mind: “Auff!!” is a thoroughly enjoyable album.
To be clear, originality is certainly not at home, but this does not prevent the Management del dolore post-operatorio from packaging a rather varied product, at times amusing, very often imbued with meaning, presenting different elements and never sounding predictable or trivial.
Musically, in fact, they manage to bring out different readings of the classic indie/new wave English sound so fashionable in the past decade, without forgetting a markedly punk attitude (in the most Italian sense of the term) and keeping well in mind that a simple yet strong chorus can do the rest.
It starts with the very fast and catchy opening tracks ("Pornobisogno, Auff!!"), which play on the lyrical irony of the singing and the (not so) subtle references to the "cursed" poets and writers so loved by a certain radical chic culture; then moves on to the relentless and almost horrific post-punk of "Amore borghese" and "Nei palazzi," which, even in the lyrics, reflect a rather critical, acidic, and nihilistic attitude.
The same attitude is also present in the strong social critique of "Macedonia" ("billions of euros for a question, Muanda would have eaten everything"), as well as in the drama of aesthetics and plastic surgery described in "Marilyn Monroe."The more violent punk emerges, however, in the post-adolescent (or post-operative, perhaps?) anger of "Signor poliziotto," or in the raw yet believable depiction of the suicide Norman in the track of the same name.
The lyrics balance between vivid contact with the reality of the facts and broader reflections, and praise is definitely due to the singer Luca Romagnoli, very skilled at varying stylistic register as well as passionately interpreting the texts themselves.
In conclusion, "Auff!!" lends itself to an interesting reading on multiple levels, and only initially may appear as an easy listening album or (sacrilege!) for a hipster evening. In reality, one soon comes to understand its more mature and intrinsic meaning and to gradually discover its various contents.
Only seemingly an album for the summer, rather an interesting Italian project.
Definitely a band to keep an eye on for the future!

In very few words, I find slightly extraordinary. In other words: almost a masterpiece.
The references are innumerable and hidden... associations that listening to their very vigorous music and watching their concerts provoke in me.
