Absolutely unexpected return of the American band Man Or Astro-Man?.
Having gone on an artistic standby for over 10 years, few would have expected their comeback on the scene. In the '90s, Man Or Astro-Man? represented a charming musical uchronia. They revived the primordial surf music inspired by Dick Dale and twangy guitar, while not shying away from electronic inserts, and an imagery taken from '50s B-movies, complete with a valve computer on stage during the tour of the acclaimed “EEVIAC” of 1999. All this without being revivalists in any way, so derailing was their surf-punk-analog electronic fusion, as centered was their retro-futurist aura (significantly ahead of the same trend typical of the '00s).
It's difficult if not pointless to choose among the best tracks on an Astronauts' album; let's say that “Defcon...” follows the evolutionary line left by the last album “A Spectrum of Infinite Scale”, thus tending to adrenaline-filled surf instrumental tracks, interspersed with robotic voices. However, true to their ongoing desire to challenge themselves, "Defcon..." features properly sung tracks (“Communication Breakdown II”, “Disintegrate”, “New Cocoon” and the beautiful “Electric Arc”) an absolute novelty in the astronauts' realm.
So, for those who missed them in the past decade, this is the perfect time to redeem your ignorance and delve into the fantasy world of the Astronauts. You won't regret it.
