The Profile

Malfunkshun are an American rock band from the Seattle scene, formed by Andrew Wood (vocals) and Kevin Wood (guitar) with Regan Hagar (drums). Blending glam theatrics with hard-hitting rock, they helped seed the early grunge movement. Their recordings were compiled on Return to Olympus (1995). Andrew later fronted Mother Love Bone and died in 1990.

Formed around Easter 1981; name derived from a malfunctioning tape deck during early demos; Andrew Wood performed as the alter ego Landrew the Lovechild and preached ‘loverock’ with the 333 motif; core lineup included Andrew Wood (vocals), Kevin Wood (guitar), and Regan “Thundarr” Hagar (drums); Andrew left to form Mother Love Bone in 1988; Return to Olympus was assembled in 1995 with Stone Gossard’s involvement; documentary Malfunkshun: The Andrew Wood Story by Scot Barbour features interviews and archival footage; Chris Cornell appears singing “Island Of Summer” in related audio material.

One review traces Malfunkshun’s raw beginnings, glam flair, and Andrew Wood’s tragic end. It highlights the documentary The Andrew Wood Story and the 1995 Return to Olympus compilation, noting seeds of the Seattle sound and Landrew’s loverock ethos. The take is admiring yet sober about uneven audio quality on rarities.
