"Irreverendi" is the new single by Malastrana, an emerging band based in Emilia Romagna (near Reggio Emilia, to be exact). What immediately strikes you is the title of this track, a neologism that is easily understood. The fusion of the two words (irreverent and reverend... clear, right?) instantly brings the mind to a precise context made up of beliefs and the choice not to be faithful to them.

"Irreverendi" tells of a reality that no one would want to be part of, but it is sadly the one in which everyone lives every day. The lyrics develop in a descriptive climax, which offers a relief in the chorus that is almost a solace. In fact, in the chorus, Gabriele Piguzzi's voice is joined by Alessandra Ferrari's, and together they sing the group's declaration of intent "how can you still laugh?"

How is it possible to remain powerless and impassive in front of a series of impositions alien to the nature of man, which inevitably becomes his chosen victim? How is it possible not to become aware of how life and the relationships it feeds on are being nullified in superficiality? And again, how can one be blind, mute, and deaf in front of a politics that no longer seeks the common good but the benefit of the individual? ("this gang of industrial politicians and bribers [...] attached to work like Gollum to the treasure").

This is what Malastrana asks, they ask with such force that they succeed in conveying it to everyone without mincing words, without fear of overdoing it or being too direct. Indeed, it seems they are trying to annul the space between those who play and sing and those who listen and feel. As if the necessary barrier of space/time/place no longer made sense. This breaking down of barriers occurs through a musical and vocal choice that together make the strength of this track. Rock is the foundation: a powerful bass that excels in a series of noteworthy performances, guitars that play accompaniment and emergence, and drums that maintain the march well. The singing is entrusted to a rapped style that isn't too harsh but still retains its peculiarity of being direct and is enlivened by the melodic insertions of Alessandra Ferrari (already a backing vocalist for Morandi, Gianni Morandi).

Overall, "Irreverendi" is a slap in the face directed at everyone. Those who listen to this song cannot help but ask themselves "what am I doing?" and reflect on it. The effect this single evokes is well summed up in the phrase "wake up, people!"
