10,000 Maniacs formed in Jamestown, New York, in 1981. Fronted by Natalie Merchant until 1993, the band blended folk-rock and college-rock with literate, socially conscious lyrics. Key albums include The Wishing Chair, In My Tribe, Blind Man’s Zoo, and Our Time in Eden; they continued with Mary Ramsey after Merchant’s departure. Guitarist Robert Buck died in 2000; the group remains active.
