Michel Houellebecq (born 1956) is a French novelist, essayist, and poet. Emerging in the 1990s with Extension du domaine de la lutte, he won the 2010 Prix Goncourt for La carte et le territoire; his work probes alienation, sexuality, consumerism, and the decline of Western society.
