One of the bands that truly deserve the great success they have achieved. In their genre, they are giants. Many great ideas and very few missteps, and their decision to stop is worthy of immense respect. Michael Stipe remains one of the most charismatic frontmen of the past 30 years.

Formed in Athens, Georgia in 1980. Core lineup included Michael Stipe, Peter Buck and Mike Mills; Bill Berry was the original drummer until 1997. Pioneers of alternative/college rock with a career spanning to their 2011 split.
