Joni Mitchell

I like her, but I have no idea if she can be considered a true artist. I mean, did she really put herself into her music? Was her music innovative or beautiful? Is there really any reason to distinguish her, say, from Tiziano Ferro, BIGBANG, MattyB, and similar "artists" who are considered terrible?
